Some experts worry that the Gulf oil spill could be as damaging to sperm whales as the Exxon Valdez oil spill was to killer whales in Alaska's Prince William Sound. They are slightly smaller than typical sperm whales and have a distinct dialect. After the Exxon Valdez disaster, some populations of killer whales were reduced by as much as 40 percent, according to a study led by marine biologist Craig Matkin of the North Gulf Oceanic Society in Alaska.
